When chanting repeat themselves in the background of the mind it brings great joy even when one is in the thick of the battle of activity

Nama Article 27th October 2009

Paramhansa Yogananda

Chanting when repeated in solitude or in congregational singing, with great devotion, it will be found that the songs subconsciously repeat themselves in the background of the mind bringing great joy even when one is in the thick of the battle of activity.

Gradually the subconscious repetition will change into superconscious realization, bringing the actual perception of God. One must chant deeper and deeper until all chanting changes into subconscious and then superconscious chanting which brings one into the divine Presence.

What is the way to get the faithless to chant?

Source: http://www.namadwaar.org/answers/questions.html

I read somewhere that it is an offense to preach the glories of the holy name of the Lord to the faithless. Then what is the way to get the faithless to chant?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

There are scriptures. The same scriptures also state that one should follow the words of the Guru without any doubts or questions and act accordingly. Going by that rule, all our masters starting from Chaitanya Mahaprabhu are crying aloud to make the people chant the Holy Name to have them liberated! So we take that path.

Every rule has an exception too!

The Divine Supreme Cheat code

Nama Article 24th October 2009

Wikipedia defines Cheat code as:

A cheat code is a key sequence, password, or series of steps to be entered within a video game that will provide the player some object, ability, or access to a level or location within the game that is secret, hidden, or that would have otherwise been unobtainable or unavailable to the player.

Unlike other cheating methods, cheat codes are implemented by the game developers themselves.

The common effects of cheat codes are:

Invulnerability ("God mode") or an Infinite resource; Unusual or interesting effects

Life is also a Video game; as it is more of a programmed one, where we have little option to change this.

Do we have a cheat code to play this game and attain the purpose of life?

The Divine Supreme Cheat code

The chanting of the Mahamantra infuses the one who is chanting with immense spiritual potency and spirit to fight with enemies viz lust, greed, fear etc. With in a short span of time, the Chanter gains and wins over each of the enemies with out any effort.

Thus the person who chants gains the purpose of life for which he has been longing for innumerable lives. The person realizes the unlimited bliss and knowledge just by Chanting.

Chanting of Divine Name would prevent detrimental tendencies from afflicting our mind.

Nama Article 23rd October 2009

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

In spite of constantly driving the ants away from sweets they keep coming towards it. But if we put some ant-repellant around the sweets, the ants cannot get inside to the sweets. Similarly, lust, anger and fear would constantly pester our mind. We cannot avoid the attack of these on our mind by our intelligence.

But if we keep chanting the names of the Lord (Bhagavan Naama) constantly, the Divine Name would prevent these detrimental tendencies from afflicting our mind.

Bhagavan Naama is our sole refuge all the time, everywhere.

Vibrations resulting from devotional singing lead to the contact of the Cosmic Vibration or the Word.

Paramhansa Yogananda

Sound or vibration is the most powerful force in the universe, and music is a divine art, to be used not for pleasure but as a path to God-realization.Vibrations resulting from devotional singing lead to the contact of the Cosmic Vibration or the Word.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." - John 1:1. God is the Word or the Cosmic Vibration.

Birthday celebrations of a True Mahathma is a UNIVERSAL FUNCTION

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

Some are family functions, some are religious functions, some are national functions, some are international functions – WHICH IS A UNIVERSAL FUNCTION – Birthday celebrations of a True Mahathma is a UNIVERSAL FUNCTION

Celebration is a part and parcel of life. The birthday of a child is celebrated by the parents. The child is joyful and the parents also take delight in it. Well! The birthday of a child is celebrated only by the family and not by others. When parents attain the age of sixty/eighty, it is celebrated by the children. All these celebrations are restricted to the family.

There are celebrations like Makara sankaraanthi or Diwali enjoyed by people of a particular religion. People belonging to other faiths do not celebrate them. Such celebrations are generally restricted to a particular religion.

Independence day, Republic day, Gandhi Jayanti are all celebrated by the whole Nation. No difference on the lines of family, religion, etc. is felt here. Nevertheless, it is restricted only to our Nation. Would another country celebrate these?

Mother's day is celebrated all over the world. It is not restricted to any one country but is celebrated by all the countries of the world. Thus, it has turned out to be an international function.

But the Jayanti (birth day function) of a Mahan has become a Universal function, as the Jayanti of Swami Abhedananda that we are celebrating here, this evening, is also being celebrated in 'Go-loka' where Swami Abhedananda is! Mahans do not belong to any particular country or religion. They are universal. Thus, their birth anniversary is celebrated all over the universe.

The Guru thinks of his disciple and this takes the disciple higher in his spiritual path.

Source: http://madhuramurali.org/index.php?option=com_lectures

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

A tortoise lays its eggs on land and moves over to the water. Staying in water, its thoughts rest on the eggs laid on the land. By the constant thought of the eggs by the tortoise the eggs get hatched. Similarly, the Guru thinks of his disciple and this takes the disciple higher in his spiritual path.

One who has fallen into the gaze of the Guru has no escape, just as the prey which has fallen into the jaws of a tiger has no escape.

Only grace can complete the process of liberation. So whichever path we go, we need to earn the grace of the Lord / Guru. Chanting Mahamantra easily secures the grace of the Guru.

I read that a Uttama Guru gets all the sins from His devotees the moment He blesses them. Is there anything that a devotee can do on his behalf to reduce Guru's sufferings?

One will be truly grateful only if he is shown the way to come out of all his sorrows. The gratitude shown to such a Guru is Guru Bhakti.

Nama Article 10th October 2009

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

By giving food, shelter, employment or riches to one, you cannot guarantee that he will be grateful to you.  One will be truly grateful only if he is shown the way to come out of all his sorrows.

It is the Guru who shows that way, and the gratitude shown to such a Guru is Guru Bhakti.

Narada Bhakti Sutra - Sutra 38

महत्सङ्गस्तु दुर्लभोऽगम्योऽमोघश्च

To come in contact with a great soul is indeed the rarest of the rare. The results of such an association is subtle, incomprehensible and unfailing in its effect.

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

The Guru cannot be likened to a precious gem because the wealthy alone would be able to purchase it. The Guru can be likened to that rare life-giving herb which may grow by the roadside – yet, a panacea powerful enough to cure the disease of 'samsara'; The genuine seeker alone will be able to spot it.
