Along with prayer, Gandhiji tried to enthrone Ramanama in his heart and took God's name with every breath

PATHWAY TO GOD By Mahatma Gandhi

"I believe," declares Gandhiji, "that prayer is the very soul and essence of religion and therefore, it must be the very core of the life of man."

Along with prayer, Gandhiji tried to enthrone Ramanama in his heart and took God's name with every breath.

At the same time he developed the attitude of self-surrender to the Lord. "I have no strength," he says "save what God has given me. I know that I can do nothing, God can do everything.

My greatest weapon is mute prayer. God demands nothing less than complete self-surrender as the price for the only real freedom that is worth having. And when a man thus loses himself, he immediately finds himself in the service of all that lives. It becomes his delight and recreation. He is a new man, never weary of spending himself in the service of God's Creation."

Who is God? Where is God?

Who is God? Where is God?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

The absolute pure consciousness is God. He is within you and He is all-pervading; omnipresent.

There are no two things in this world. He alone exists and no body else.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE DIVINE NAME ACCORDING TO SAINT NAMDEV

Nama Article 28th January 2010

Gems from Bhagavan - A Necklace of Sayings by Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi.

Bhagavan, when asked by a devotee whether he should continue taking the name of God as advised by his late Guru, or change over to vichara (enquiry), referred the devotee to an article in Vision of September 1937, on the 'Philosophy of the Divine Name according to Saint Nam Dev', in which it is explained that God and God's Name are all the same.

The below quotation is from a short work by Namdev titled 'The Philosophy of the Divine Name'. Sri Ramana first discovered it in 1937 and for the last thirteen years of his life he kept a copy of it on a small bookshelf by his bed. He frequently read it out when visitors asked him about the nature and usefulness of Japa and from the number of times he spoke of it with approval it is reasonable to assume that he fully endorsed its contents.

Reproducing the article that appeared in Vision below

PHILOSOPHY OF THE DIVINE NAME ACCORDING TO SAINT NAMDEV

1. The Name permeates the entire universe densely.

Who can tell to what depths in the nether regions and to what heights in the heavens It extends? The ignorant fools undergo the eighty-four lacs of species of births, not knowing the essence of things. The Name is immortal. Forms are innumerable but Name is all that.

2. The Name itself is form and form itself is Name.

There is no distinction between Name and form. God became manifest and assumed Name and form. Hence the Name the Vedas have established. Beware there is no Mantram beyond the Name. Those who say otherwise are ignorant fools. Name is Keshava Himself. This is known only to the loving devotee of the Lord.

3. The all-pervading nature of the Name can only be understood when one recognizes one's own 'I'. When one's own name is not recognized, it is impossible to get the all-pervading Name. When one knows himself then he finds the Name everywhere.

4 None can realize the Name by the practice of knowledge, meditation or austerity. Surrender yourself at first at the feet of the Guru and learn to know who the 'I' in you is. After finding the source of that 'I' merge your individuality in that Oneness – which is Self-existent and devoid of all duality. It is that Name that permeates the three Worlds. The Name is Para-Brahman itself where there is no action arising out of Dwaita (duality),

Here it will be interesting to quote an extract from the teachings of Swami Ramdas Maharaj bearing on the above subject:-

"The easiest way to reach or realize Sri Ram is surely to repeat His most powerful Name. Smaran is to remember what we have forgotten that we are His Swarup. We are always He, but our ignorance has made us forget our real nature. Continuous and ceaseless Smaran of Sri Ram is to remove our ignorance and realize ultimately that we are all He and He alone. There is none but He. To attain this, our minds must be spotlessly pure. Repetition of His great Name is again the only means or Sadhana. A pure mind is the first preliminary to our surrendering to Sri Ram. Let us conceive a strong and intense love for Sri Ram. - the more intense our love for Him, our remembrance becomes automatically more and more continuous and unbroken, because it is our nature to remember that which we love most."

Repetition of Name will create Love. Hari will be yours when you attain Love

Source: Pagal Harnath letters

As a fisherman catches the fish from the deep water with the help of a net, a man can catch that uncatchable One by throwing the net if Name.

One should not be disheartened at failure of initial attempts. By perseverance the uncathable One is sure to be caught in the long run. However one may practice Yoga or austerities, he cannot attain Krishna unless he has faith in Name.

It is to teach this simple way, that the jewel of Golak (Krishna) made His advent at Navadweep and proclaimed with tears in His eyes, "Repeat Name, Oh Jiwas, Repetition of Name will create Love. Hari will be yours when you attain Love."

There may be other ways but none so simple and elegant. That is the reason why the Kali Yuga is the most blessed of the four ages.

What is the surest way to know the Creator's purpose for my role having been born as a human being?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

You have now started thinking 'What is the purpose of my Creation.' That is the very purpose of Lord's Creation.

The one who loves life succeeds in life

Source: http://www.namadwaar.org/answers/questions.html

Who succeeds in life?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

The one who loves life succeeds in life.

----------------

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

We hold lot of expectations in our worldly or spiritual life and when they are not fulfilled we feel dejected. We get depressed. We lose interest in life (worldly or spiritual, as the case may be). But what should we do?

We should learn to accept and like whatever comes to us. Only then can we enjoy happiness. We should learn to like whatever comes to us, according to our destiny, as per our 'prãrabda'.

Love life. Learn to like the situation that you have been placed in.

What happens then? Life will be a happy one to live. You can never be happy if you hold specifications. If you are not happy, you do not enjoy peace and calm. You will, then, not be able to achieve anything either in this life or after. Therefore, try to accept whatever comes to you.

"My Father alone exists, nothing else; nobody else"

How to measure one's Spiritual Maturity? In other words, I fully understand that I possess all the essential values of a human being. How to sense the Spiritual Strength or power in me?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

There are no two powers in this world. There is only one power – that is the spiritual power. You may call it by different names – the Brahman, the Atman, the Infinite, God, and so on. Realizing that this spiritual power is the only existent power is the true realization. The extent to which one is aware of and experiencing the above fact determines one's spiritual maturity.

Oh! Brother! Take shelter under the shades of the huge trees and go about the villages of Vraja begging for alms !

Drink freely the waters of the Holy Yamuna as much as you want and clothe yourself in the rags that lie scattered here and there.

Consider any word of praise uttered by others as highly venomous and treat as nectar the shameful insults hurled upon you.

Complete surrender is another name for jnana or liberation

Nama Article 21st January 2010

Source: Gems from Bhagavan - A Necklace of Sayings by Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi

There are two ways of achieving surrender. One is looking into the source of the 'I' and merging into that source.

The other is feeling, 'I am helpless myself, God alone is all powerful, and except by throwing myself completely on Him, there is no other means of safety for me'; and thus gradually developing the conviction that God alone exists and the ego does not count.

Both methods lead to the same goal. Complete surrender is another name for jnana or liberation.
