Remember always the Name of Hari

Prasna Uttara Malika (A garland of questions and answers) – Adisankara

किं स्मर्त्तव्यं पुरुषैः ?

हरिनाम सदा न यावनी भाषा

What is to be remembered by people ?

Always the Name of Hari; not the jargon of the unregenerate.

Do not put off taking the Name for tomorrow.

Nama Article 27th March 2010

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

The ocean is always full of waves and if you think you will bathe after the waves subside, you cannot have a bath. So let there be waves, at the same time finish your bathing.

Do not put off taking the Name for tomorrow.

You need not consider whether the place is proper or not, whether it is holy or not.

Name is constantly pure, and the impurest, on taking the Name, becomes completely pure.

Chant the Mahamantra Nama kirtan :

Constantly thinking about the Lotus feet of the Lord is Bhakthi

Sivananda Lahiri – By Acharya Adishankara

Ankolam nija beeja santhathi rayaskkantho soochika,

Sadhvi naija vibhum latha kshithiruham sindhussaridvallabham,

Prapnothiha yadha thadha pasupathe padara sindhu dwaiyam,

Chetho vruthi roopethya thishtathi sada saa bhakthirithyuchyathe.

Like the real seed progeny reaches for the mother ankola tree (This tree has the characteristic that when its seeds fall from the tree on the ground and mature, they travel to the base of the tree and join the roots by their own nature),

Like the needle of the magnet always turns towards the north pole.

Like the chaste woman always thinks about her husband,

Like the tender creeper reaches for a support,

Like the river that constantly travels towards the sea,

If we constantly think about the lotus feet of Lord Pasupathi,

And stays there always,

Then that state is called devotion.

Rama Nama is the very essence (‘saram’) of all Epics, Shastras and the Vedas

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

Rama Nãma enjoys a special status. This Mantra is called 'Tãraka mantra'. 'Tãraka' means to cross over. This Mantra helps one cross over the 'janma' (birth).

Hence, it is called so.

'Sruti, Smriti, Purãnesu Rama Nãma prakiirtitam tan Nãma kirtanam bhooyah pãpatraya vinãshanam'

It is said that the very essence ('saram') of all Epics, Shastras and the Vedas is only 'Tãraka Mantra'. The fruit earned by chanting all other Mantras is earned by chanting this Rama Mantra.

Why do we have crime and injustice in the world?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

That is the nature of the Kali Yuga. The state of the current yuga has been predicted long back by our Maharshis in the various spiritual texts of our Dharma. We cannot avoid that. The only way out is to try to remain unaffected by it, by holding to the Feet of the Lord.

The simplest way towards this goal is by chanting the Mahamantra.

Recall all that Guru has done for us. Anything seen around us should in some way or the other remind us of Him

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

A boy thinks of his mother - how she used to care for him, how on every occasion she would prepare certain dishes for him, etc. Similarly, friends think of each other. They recall the loving acts of their dear and near ones.

In the same way one should be in Guru bhava. Recall all that He has done for us. Anything seen around us should in some way or the other remind us of Him. To think of the Guru/God like this is 'Bhakti' (devotion). One should forever be in such thoughts. Read Prahlada's, Dhruva's lives. God has been their protector. It is full of Guru Prabhãva (the glory of Guru).

Human birth is meant only for the purpose of attainment of Bhagavan

Nama Article 15th March 2010

Excerpts from a discourse by our Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji

"Human birth is meant only for the purpose of attainment of Bhagavãn."

Let's say you are on a hijacked aircraft. What are your feelings then? Does anything other than your life matter to you then? Is anything - your wealth, your learning, family and friends of any help to you then? A fervent prayer is on your lips and in your heart. The intensity of your prayer is at its deepest, for, you are in the most precarious situation.

Well! Your life is similar to this. Even as we look around we find the world filled with various kinds of sorrows - diseases both physical and mental, financial problems, strained human relationships even amongst immediate family members, poverty, corruption, disloyalty, dishonesty. Countries wage war with each other. There is distrust between nations. Thus this material world is not of much worth. Anyone of the above can hit you any moment Yearn for freedom from this shackle of life just as you would yearn for safety/freedom while caught in a hijacked aircraft.

The intensity of your prayer should be that of a person on hijacked aircraft who has no other thought but the one thought of getting out of that particular situation.

With the grace of the Lord protecting you, you will be least affected by the world

Source: http://www.namadwaar.org/articles/BhavasInBhagavatam4.html

Grace of God for the worldly

One should get the grace of the Lord before entering into worldly affairs.

With the grace of the Lord protecting you, you will be least affected by the world, just like the kid who holds a pole tightly and spins around it does not fall.

This is shown in the life of Dhruva in Srimad Bhagavatam.

Let everyone be as he/she is. Why should they change? Let us transform ourselves.

"You cannot correct the world. Each one has his own vasana; hence, will act only as per his vasana. You cannot correct others. You should correct only yourself. Of what use is it in advising others to correct themselves without correcting ourselves? Your expectation of this one or that one to behave in a particular way as you deem fit is a grave mistake. Let everyone be as he/she is. Why should they change? Let us transform ourselves."

What does the Prahlada charitra show in Srimad Bahagavatham?

Prahlada did not lament about the sufferings inflicted on him by his own father, did not expect the persons making him suffer to change. Instead he accepted the situation he was placed and was steadfast in His devotion of Chanting the Divine Name. That was verily the solution as he overcame all the sufferings and attained the purpose of life purely by the Grace of Lord.
